Welsh Gold: Provenance Premium in a Record Gold Market

Gold prices have moved sharply over the past five years, with UK spot gold rising from around £1,245/oz at the low point to above £4,000/oz at its peak, and recently trading around the £3,100/oz level. That provides the bullion backdrop. Welsh gold, however, has historically traded on a different basis.
The Clogau-St David’s Mine is central to that distinction. Historic production was limited, with more than 78,000 troy ounces produced between the 1860s and 1911. Welsh gold from the mine is also closely tied to royal provenance, from its association with the 1911 investiture of the Prince of Wales to royal wedding rings beginning in 1923 with Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. That tradition has continued through later generations of the Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
A useful recent market reference is Arkadian's 2025 sale of three 1 oz, 24-carat Clogau-St David’s Welsh gold coin for around £20,000 each, at a time when the contained gold value was reported at around £2,344. That represented a premium of approximately 8.5 times the gold content. The point is not that every Welsh gold item can be valued in the same way, but that authenticated Clogau provenance has attracted a material premium above ordinary bullion.
Arkadian’s current pendant sale sits within that provenance-led market. Each pendant is handmade in 18-carat Welsh gold from Clogau-St David’s and forms part of a very limited release. The sale remains open for eligible investors who wish to register their interest.
