BBC Online News Article 10 July 2025

An excellent recent article on the BBC (see link below) highlights Greenland's importance to all the major global superpowers, China, the US and Russia, something which becomes pretty obvious when you look at a map of the globe looking down on the Arctic circle (first screenshot below).

The UK's proximity to Greenland and importance to the defence of the Atlantic is also something that can be easily overlooked (second screenshot below).

As for Greenland's importance from a natural resources standpoint, the UK Critical Minerals List, published in 2021, includes Niobium, the Rare Earth Elements and Tantalum, all of which are abundant at the large-scale Motzfeldt Critical Metals Project in south Greenland which Alba has just agreed to invest in.

As the British Geological Survey has stated: "The UK and the EU are almost wholly dependent on imports of these materials. Availability is compounded by their low substitutability and recycling rates, commonly less than 1 per cent. Shortages of critical raw materials may affect UK businesses and adversely influence economic growth and prosperity."

We will be looking to the UK Government to support Alba's efforts to develop the Motzfeldt Project as part of the UK's clear need to ensure its own sustainable and secure supply of critical raw materials.
