Why survey the seabed at Motzfeldt?

Motzfeldt’s successful 2026 field programme has delivered new information for assessing future infrastructure options, including preliminary screening of water depth at two proposed port locations.

Water depth is a practical consideration when assessing a possible port site. A vessel approaching a loading point needs sufficient clearance beneath its hull. Initial information about depth helps inform the assessment of a location and the further investigations that may be needed.

At Motzfeldt, BioApp carried out this preliminary screening at two locations being considered for the shipment of future primary concentrates. This connects the fieldwork to a practical development question: how material produced by a potential future operation could leave the project by sea.

The information contributes to the continuing infrastructure and development review being undertaken by engineering consultancy NIRAS. Alongside the water depth screening, BioApp completed environmental baseline studies at key potential infrastructure sites, allowing existing environmental conditions to be considered early in planning.

Both port locations remain prospective. Completing this preliminary work during the field season has added useful information to the review, strengthening the basis for assessing future shipping options alongside Motzfeldt’s engineering and environmental requirements.
